Zoltan Peter

Biography

Zoltan Peter is a sociologist, author and essayist. His academic and journalistic work focuses on issues of social coexistence, democratic tolerance and the relationships between the individual, culture and society.
His research interests range from the sociology of culture and political philosophy to education and migration studies. He devotes particular attention to the social conditions under which people develop their interests, beliefs, likes and dislikes. In doing so, he examines the interplay between social background, habitus, cultural experiences and individual relationships with the world.
He is the author of the book Lajos Kassák, Vienna and Constructivism (Peter Lang, 2010) and is a co-author of, amongst others, the books Integration: Openness and Tolerance (Springer, 2020) and School at the Limits of Tolerance (Springer, 2026). In his current research projects, he is working on the development of a general theory of relationships, which examines human capacity for relationships beyond conventional categories such as origin, migration background, integration and collective identity.
Alongside his research, he publishes essays and socially critical articles in which he emphasises, in particular, the importance of art, culture and critical thinking for an open, democratic society.
